1: What did Epstein's emails reveal about his relationship with Trump?
Despite once being friends, Epstein regularly emailed about Trump in derogatory terms. In one particularly harsh message, Epstein wrote: "I have met some very bad people. None as bad as Trump. Not one decent cell in his body." In an email to author Michael Wolff, Epstein claimed Trump knew about "the girls" and "asked Ghislaine to stop." In another message, Epstein called Trump the "dog that hasn't barked."
2. What other powerful figures appear in Epstein's email exchanges?
The released documents show email correspondence between Epstein and several prominent individuals, including venture capitalist Peter Thiel, author Deepak Chopra, former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers, journalist Michael Wolff, former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler, former Trump adviser Steve Bannon, Prince Andrew, and publicist Peggy Siegal. However, appearing in these emails doesn't necessarily mean anyone was involved in Epstein's criminal activities.
3. What was Peter Thiel's connection to Epstein?
Messages between Epstein and Peter Thiel, PayPal co-founder and billionaire Republican donor, suggested intermittent contact. In one email from May 2014, Epstein wrote to Thiel: "That was fun, see you in 3 weeks." The nature and extent of their relationship beyond these brief exchanges isn't clear from the released documents.
4. Why did Epstein email Deepak Chopra about a Trump accuser?
In November 2016, Epstein shared a news article with author Deepak Chopra about Katie Johnson, who had accused Donald Trump of raping her at age 13 at an alleged Epstein "sex party." Johnson had abruptly dropped her civil lawsuit. Chopra responded by asking Epstein whether Katie had also dropped her civil case against Epstein himself.
5. What did the emails reveal about Prince Andrew and the allegations against him?
Epstein forwarded Prince Andrew an email in March 2011 about an upcoming Daily Mail story regarding Virginia Giuffre's allegations that Andrew raped her when she was a minor working for Epstein. Andrew responded: "What? I don't know any of this. How are you responding?" Epstein replied that he'd asked his lawyers to send a letter, adding dismissively: "I'm not sure how to respond, the only person she didn't have sex with was Elvis."
6. How did Epstein try to control the narrative around Virginia Giuffre's accusations?
Epstein actively worked to discredit Giuffre's allegations through his email network. He told New York Times reporter Landon Thomas Jr. that Giuffre's allegations against Prince Andrew were "delusional." He also emailed publicist Peggy Siegal in 2011, asking her to reach out to a media outlet and tell them Giuffre was "a fraud." These emails show Epstein's deliberate efforts to shape media coverage of the accusations against him and his associates.
7. What did former Obama officials discuss with Epstein?
Former Treasury Secretary Larry Summers and former White House counsel Kathryn Ruemmler both exchanged emails with Epstein. Summers criticized Trump in October 2017, calling him the "world's luckiest guy in terms of opposition, economy etc." Ruemmler's emails with Epstein were described as revolving around personal conversations, though specific details weren't provided in the released documents.
